My child has never painted before — can they really do this?
Yes — and that’s actually our specialty. Every painting in the gallery above was made by a student who picked up an oil brush for the first time at QAS. Arthur teaches the same techniques professional artists use, broken down step-by-step at a 9-year-old’s pace. No prior experience needed. No “natural talent” needed either. What we provide is patient guidance and the right method.
Isn't 9 too young for oil painting?
Not at all — in fact, oil paint is more forgiving than acrylic for kids. It stays workable for hours, so they can fix mistakes, scrape back, and layer over without panic. The real reason most kids never try oil is that schools find it too complex and expensive to set up. That’s exactly what we solve.
Why oil painting and not acrylic or watercolour?
Three reasons:
- It’s the most forgiving medium for beginners — slow drying means kids can rework areas instead of starting over.
- The results look like real art — depth, richness, and that gallery feel watercolour and craft paint can’t match.
- It’s a lifelong skill — every Old Master worked in oil. Once your child has the foundation, they can paint at any age, anywhere, for life.
Will the painting be dry enough to take home on Friday?
Surface-dry yes, fully cured no — that’s just how oil paint works. We use a quick-drying medium so the painting is touch-dry by day 5 and safe to transport flat. Full curing takes a few weeks at home, after which it’s ready to varnish and frame. We send each child home with a one-page care guide so you know exactly what to do.
What does my child need to bring each day?
Just a packed lunch, a water bottle, and a hat. We provide everything else: canvas, oil paints, brushes, palettes, easels, aprons, morning tea, and afternoon tea. Wear clothes that can handle a bit of paint — we provide aprons, but oil paint is still oil paint.
What if my child misses a day, or decides it's not for them?
Each day builds on the previous one, so we don’t recommend missing days. If a single absence is unavoidable, Arthur will help your child catch up the next morning before the cohort starts. And if by end of day 1 your child genuinely isn’t enjoying it, just let us know — we’ll refund the unused days, no questions.
What's actually included in the $800 early bird price?
Everything except lunch:
- 5 full days of instruction (32+ hours)
- A working-artist instructor, not a casual holiday-camp staffer
- Gallery-grade canvas, oil paints, brushes, palettes, easels
- Morning and afternoon tea, every day
- A finished oil painting to take home and frame
Is the studio supervised? Is Arthur cleared to work with children?
Yes. Arthur holds a current Working with Children Check (Blue Card) — a Queensland legal requirement for anyone working with under-18s. The studio is supervised throughout class hours, with secure entry. We’re a small dedicated art studio in Upper Mount Gravatt, not a shared co-working space.
